Week 2 Update: Rental Module Gets Real, Privacy Upgrades, and Social Progress

Moviebaker Journey Week 2 Recap

A Transparent Ride to €1M in 365 Days

Welcome back! Week two has been busy here at Moviebaker HQ, and we want to share what really happened progress, hiccups, and a few odd browser bugs included.

Here’s a full recap of what happened this week:

Rental Module Gets Real: From Beta Dreams to Workflow Tool

If you’ve ever tried renting out your gear using Excel and Google Calendar, you know it’s a headache. We’ve felt that pain too. That’s why our Rental Module is being built with one goal: make rentals less stressful for producers and rental houses.

This week, we:

  • Fine-tuned the smart equipment database. Enter a brand and model, and specs autofill instantly size, weight, and more.
  • Improved the calendar view for gear availability. Green means free, yellow means maybe, red means booked. No more guessing.
  • Added rental history tracking. You’ll know who had the gear, when, and what condition it came back in.
  • Rolled out smarter quote generation. You can split quotes by department, create PDF-ready catalogs with photos, crew costs, and even subrented gear.

The UI stayed clean. No complicated dashboards or hidden menus just one page that does the job without the stress.

We’re still looking for beta testers to help shape this module. If you rent gear often or just wish it was easier join our beta testing program: moviebaker.app

Sending Tool Gets a Privacy-Focused Upgrade

We rebuilt our peer-to-peer sending module (no servers involved), and this week we made it clearer and safer to use.

Here’s what’s new:

  • Compatibility alerts for unsupported browsers.
  • Instruction banners so users know what tabs to keep open.
  • FAQ section and a video tutorial added.
  • Improved download experience with clearer permissions dialogue.

We also tackled one important question we kept getting:

“Why do I have to give access to folders?”

Answer: So you don’t need to click ‘save’ for every file. It writes files directly, without ever reading your system. It’s just efficient.

This upgrade happened just as WeTransfer announced a new policy: they now reserve the right to use your uploads to train machine learning models. Needless to say, Moviebaker doesn’t and never will do that.

We just wanted something safe to use ourselves. Turns out, a lot of you want that too.

Try it free at moviebaker.app/send while we figure out a permanent name for it.

Social Media + App Numbers: Progress, Not Perfection

We’re not going viral yet, but we’re definitely growing:

Platform Update
TikTok Most engaging, over 1K views per video
Instagram Reels hitting 4K–5K views
LinkedIn Weak, but trying new industry posts
YouTube 25 subs, 1K views total
Threads Still on pause
Facebook Stable performance

On the app side, our tools are slowly gaining traction. We’re getting solid feedback from testers especially from Poland, Italy, and the UK on rental flow, quoting, and UI simplicity.

Little Wins, Weird Bugs, and What’s Next

Some of our favorite moments this week:

  • A realization: Poland doesn’t really use the word “grip” …at least not the way the rest of the film world does.
  • We had to take a break mid-recording because Kraków is melting.
  • We scribbled notes from Salvatore’s real-world gear rental chaos. That’s what drives the features we build.

Coming next: we’re adding multi-day pricing, partner gear tracking, and prepping for AI-assisted quoting the kind where you paste in an email and get an instant rental quote back.

Yep, that’s in the works. Early tests already nailed it 80% of the time.

Want to Shape the Tools You’ll Use?

This week reminded us why we started Moviebaker: to make creative work easier, less expensive, and more honest.

Whether you're a filmmaker juggling your own gear, or a rental owner managing hundreds of items, we’d love you to be part of our beta crew.

Sign up at moviebaker.app We won’t make you read a privacy policy filled with AI training disclaimers. Promise.

See you in Week 3!
